This month, we're doing a short Q&A session to our previous Scene Stealers, Randy Raharja. Currently living in Singapore, the art director of Saatchi & Saatchi Singapore talks about his passion, what art means to him, and more.

 

Ego: What art means to you?

Randy: Art is an entertainment, a job, a communication tool and also an escape from boredom.

 

Ego: When you create artwork, where do you usually got your ideas / inspiration?

Randy: I'm a shameless copy machine. Like a kid, I emulate the works I thought interesting, from Tim Burton, Sagmeister, Amano, James Jean, chefs, footballers, film directors, even from kids. I believe the inspiration comes from our own desire to do better things, or sometimes, to survive. 

 

Ego: What are you currently working on? Is there any upcoming project that you're planning to do?

Randy: We're working together with an international organization that deals with forest fire in Indonesia, the work should be on the news by 3rd quarter this year, wait for it! The other interesting project that we're working on is related to Indonesian tourism, it will be out in the next few months. 

 

Ego: Who's your favorite artist?

Randy: Hard to mention one by one, but my favorite artist/designer is still Stefan Sagmeister and second close, Shigeo Fukuda. For Illustrators, I love the works of Yuko Shimizu and James Jean. For film maker, Christopher Nolan and Hayao Miyazaki. 

 

Ego: Okay, one last question. Do you have any message for young people out there who's interested in art but don't know where to start?

Randy: Just do whatever you think is right and fun. Keep doing it and do it better every time.
